A group of Paihia citizens developed this survey to enable you to have a say in the development of social programmes which will benefit our community. The survey results are now in and collated. Over 240 people completed the survey, giving a great insight into the issues that are relevant to this community, and how we should be tackling them. A big thank you to all who took the time to take part.

Of 240 completed returns, which were female 70% and Male 30%, from areas Paihia, Waitangi, Haruru Falls, Opua, Te Haumi, Russell, Kawakawa, Kerikeri and a few not stated.
High on the list for “would be useful” social services/programmes were; Budgeting skills, Drug & Alcohol Counseling, Citizens Advice Bureau, & Computer skills. Another highly stated issue was the lack of Police presence in Paihia, lack of ‘a person’ to receive calls, lack of Police cover hours etc. Plus, an affordable Child-care service, activities for the youth as well as training opportunities for employment and an inclusion of our elderly, not isolation. (Being mindful that there are some who ‘choose’ to be alone.) Plus the ongoing lack of local public transport.
A summary of the overall comments received, suggest that a Central Community Centre was needed. Some of the services suggested could readily be introduced to our current Paihia Memorial Hall. It needs to have a driver and enough passionate supporters to “make it happen”, with longevity included. The Paihia Memorial Hall is capable of meeting some of these needs however, should a greater number of the new suggested introductions go ahead in earnest, then it would make sense to look to a ‘purpose built’ Community Centre. To be discerned is what is ‘needed’ and what would be ‘nice to have’. So now the hard work really begins.
