WAITANGI MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK OPENING![box]SAVE THE DATE – Sunday 16 October 2016
Further details to be announced soon.[/box] [hr]
Of course the biggest news is that we finally have an opening date – Sunday 16 October. There are still a number of jobs to be done but the team are dedicated to making it happen! More details on the opening will be announced soon. Park progress below…
FULLERS GREATSIGHTS $5K!
Wow! Huge thanks to FULLERS GREATSIGHTS for their generous donation of $5000 to the WMBP. This support is greatly appreciated. Fullers Greatsights will also be supporting the WMBP by being a registration and distribution outlet for WMBP membership tags and maps, alongside a small number of other outlets in town. The intention is to increase the number of distribution outlets, once we fine tune the system. More details to come!
TRAIL HUB EARTHWORKS COMPLETE
Huge thanks once again to ANDREW YOUNGER CONTRACTING, for donating yet more time to the project. Andrew made a splendid job of all of the garden beds and concrete block parking edging. Thanks to the SALT AIR CREW for their assistance with this too. Now with almost all the plants and mulch in we are ready for the final task of hub structures – entrance sign, sign shelter, portaloo screen and forest gate.
HUB STRUCTURES UNDERWAY
BGBB TEAM ARCHITECTS’ great concept designs have been drawn up by VISION CONSULTING ENGINEERS LTD – huge thanks to these two companies for their generous support! The plans are now in the hands of builder JAMIE PETHERICK. Jamie is under pressure to complete the build prior to opening and this has to fit in around all of his other jobs. All builders are very busy these days, which is surely a great sign for our area! However Jamie is super keen to see the facility open as soon possible and has jumped on board without hesitation! Meanwhile Tiff does the run around sourcing materials, constantly hounding those amazing guys at BAY OF ISLANDS ITM!
EXTERNAL ROAD SIGNAGE COMPLETE
Many thanks go once again to the team at BROADSPECTRUM. This time it was DAVE CASWELL who facilitated the SIGNAGE INSTALLATION CREW to help Tiff put in all of the roadside signage, all FOC. This was a big job and Tiff was so grateful for this support, the crew were a pleasure to work with.
OH A PLANTING WE WILL GO… AGAIN
The sun shone on what was yet another brilliant turnout for the 2nd Planting Bee held at the WAITANGI MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK TRAIL HUB on 21 August. They came from all over – Waitangi, Paihia, Kerikeri, Whangarei and even Palmerston North! It was a record number for the books with 43 keen volunteers on hand getting the job done in just over an hour. Blink and you will miss us! Over 650 plants in the ground. Many thanks go to CHARLIE WITTS for his expert instruction and organisation and also to NORTHLAND REGION CORRECTIONS FACILITY for supplying ALL of the plants free of charge, grown at the Prison in their Horticulture Department. Thank you to NRCF team GERRY HINDRIKSEN and KATRINA UPPERTON for their efforts in facilitating this and to all of the GREEN THUMBS that helped in the propagation process.
But most of all thanks to the members of our magnificent community who keep turning up in droves when they hear the call… DOUG BOGARDUS, MIKE, MAUREEN, BEN & SARAH BLACKMAN, CARL HUDSON, FRITS SCHOUTEN, KAREN MARKIN, NADIA LEHMANN, NATEELE HOWARTH, MAEDISEN & KAEMBAL TAYLOR, PETER SECCOMBE, RACHEL FUSSELL, INDIANA &MACKENZIE CAMERON, RAE SMYTHE, ABBIE & HECTOR GOLDIE, ROBIN, TIFF, FREYA & THEA HOLLAND, ANNE-MARIE CAMERON, SARAH WALDRON, JOHN DUFF, SUE LEYLAND, CHARLES & GEOFF STEWART, JOHN GIBBS, LYN SHEPSTONE, STEVE & KARTINI MARTIN, PETE RICHARDS, VAUGHAN WITTS, RUSSELL, KARIN, BRISA & ILHA CARLYON, ANDREW FAGAN, ODETTE YATES and NEIL DYKES.

SURFACING TAANE’S CLIMB
It was another BEE-UTY! With a few cancellations in the days before an SOS was put out for additional helpers for the surfacing of sections of TAANE’S CLIMB on 28 August. Seemingly from out of nowhere a team of 18 eager volunteers showed up and true to WMBP Volunteer Working Bee form – this job was complete in even lesser time, with the prescribed task finished in just over 40 minutes! Blink and you will miss us! This was primarily due to some ‘track surfacing fairies’ who came in a little earlier and completed a good chunk of the project before the Bee Crew arrived. What a delight to the eyes!
Huge thanks to the spectacular SALT AIR CREW for all of their efforts on TAANE’S CLIMB – GRANT & JAKE HARNISH, TROY O’DONOGHUE, and MANU CLUEARD. Thanks to fellow track surfacers HEINZ MARTI, CARL HUDSON, DARREN MARKIN, GARY LUCAS, ROBIN & TIFF HOLLAND, JACKIE & JOE LAVELL, DAVE RIVINGTON, ROB GALLEY, PAUL MAXWELL, LUKE ROMEYN, CARL LE HERON andBRUCE GORDON. And a special shout for BRUCE and CARL H for their extra efforts on the track with the roller (hard work on steep drops!) and to JACKIE for returning it to Kerikeri for us. Also thanks again to BROADSPECTRUM PUKETONA QUARRY for donating all of the track surfacing material and to ANDREW YOUNGER CONTRACTING for delivering it to site, FOC. Legends!
With the job done in no time at all they were still keen for more, so teams were disbursed throughput the park for some general trail maintenance, working well into the afternoon. We ticked off much more than anticipated. This was another magnificent day on the hill. Thank you to LESLEY & GARY LUCAS, WMBP Volunteer Managers, for all of their communications and H&S support and thanks to DARREN MARKIN for his wonderful shots capturing our community spirit in action.
THANK YOU VERY MULCH!
Thanks to the ‘mulch movers’ who helped at the WAITANGI MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK working bee yesterday. The crew was moving mulch from a site on TAHUNA RD to the WMBP Trail Hub Car Park. Thanks especially to CHARLIE WITTS for all of the logistics (and for working like ten men). Huge thanks to BILL TANE and TE TII WAITANGI B3 TRUST for giving us the mulch and to MARTY ROBINSON and KERIKERI ORGANICS for loaning us all of the baskets. Thank you to mulch movers HEINZ MARTI, DAVE SANSON, GARY LUCAS, GAYLE MCMASTER, NICKI KEMPTHORNE, JOHN GIBBS, JO CLAPTON and TIFF HOLLAND. Thanks once again to LESLEY LUCAS, for all of her communications support. Bam, another job done!
OH A PLANTING WE WILL GO… TAKE 3!
With the mulch all another successful ‘plant’ was held on Sunday 11 September. True to WMBP bee form it was over in an hour which left plenty of time for making new friends and catching up with old. These bees are quite the social occasion! Again they came from far and wide with Whangarei and Kerikeri both representing beside the locals.
Thanks to CHARLIE WITTS for his expert instruction and organisation and also to NORTHLAND REGION CORRECTIONS FACILITY for supplying ALL of the plants. Thank you to NRCF team GERRY HINDRIKSEN and KATRINA UPPERTON for their efforts facilitating this and to all of the GREEN THUMBS that helped in the process. But most of all thanks to the members of our magnificent community (it’s been said before!) who keep turning up in droves when they hear the call… ALICE HOSTED, ANGELA MARINKOVIC, CARL HUDSON, KAREN MARKIN, NATEELE HOWARTH, ROBIN, TIFF, FREYA & THEA HOLLAND, JOHN GIBBS, VAUGHAN WITTS, DEREK PROBERT, THE SMITH FAMILY – WAYNE, TAUNAHA, ETHAN , JAMIE, ALEXANDER & BRAEDEN, DARRYL JEFFS, LESLEY GARNER, MARCEL & TANE LAUTIRESSA, VAUGHAN WITTS, DEBZ & NICO RUAWAI and DON MORRSION. Lastly, thank you to LESLEY LUCAS, for all of the communications and H&S support.
